What is web hosting?

Web hosting is the server environment that stores the website and delivers it when someone visits your domain. The domain is the address, DNS connects that address to the right server, and SSL enables the secure HTTPS connection visitors expect.

What should a small business hosting plan include?

Look for reliable uptime, SSL support, backups, reasonable performance, access to support and a setup that fits the technology used by the website. A small brochure site, WordPress site and ecommerce store can have very different hosting requirements.

Why does SSL matter?

SSL encrypts the connection between the browser and the website and enables HTTPS. Without it, browsers may show security warnings that damage trust. HTTPS is also part of a technically healthy web presence, although installing a certificate by itself does not make a website rank.

How does hosting affect site speed?

Hosting can influence server response time, but it is only one part of performance. Image sizes, JavaScript, CSS, fonts, third-party scripts and page design also affect loading. Upgrading hosting will not fix an oversized or poorly built page on its own.

What happens during a website migration?

A hosting migration usually involves moving the site files or database, connecting the domain, verifying SSL, testing forms and checking that important URLs still work. If URL paths change, redirects should be planned so visitors and search engines are not sent to broken pages.

Do I need managed hosting?

Managed hosting can be useful if you do not want to handle updates, backups or technical troubleshooting yourself. The value depends on the platform and how important the website is to daily operations. A business that relies heavily on online leads may value support differently from a simple informational site.

Hosting checklist

  • HTTPS loads correctly on the main domain
  • The preferred www or non-www version redirects consistently
  • Backups are available and tested
  • Forms and email notifications work
  • The site returns normal 200 responses for live pages and real 404s for missing pages
  • Search crawlers are not accidentally blocked
